Rap Artist
In 1999, Roger Suggs started singing rap music under the professional title, Vigalantee, which stands for a rapper who is about change.
Suggs said that what he fights for is a change in his community, hence the unusual name for his group, and has performed all across the country. Performing and talking of change in the community has presented him with national exposure.
There has been some difficulty with the name for his group, Vigalantee. Many misspell the name and interpret the perspective of ‘vigilante’ as a bad guy against the authoritative system. However, Suggs said he is promoting quite the opposite.
“I’m the good guy,” Suggs said. “I’m the truth when it comes to stopping this black on black crime and stopping this drug game from killing the community.”
Suggs has worked to push the “no jaangle” movement to the highest level in the community. The definition of no jaangle, according to Suggs, means never compromising as an individual and recognizing that an individual does not have to be ignorant to be successful.
According to Suggs, this movement is about increasing awareness of the social and economic impact of Hip Hop. It is also to break down the barriers to reach the average casual listener or critic who does not know about this music genre. In addition, the movement influences to help others do great things through education, community involvement, and mentoring.
One of Suggs CDs, “A Second is a Lifetime,” targets the idea to “beware of false prophets,” (Matthew 7:15). It includes song titles such as “Ghetto boy,” “Beautiful world,” and “A second is a lifetime.”
